Amateur radio – often referred to as “ham radio” – has been one of my enduring passions. It’s a hobby that connects people across the globe, fosters a sense of community, and provides a means to assist in communication efforts during various events and emergencies.

Recently, I had the opportunity to blend my interest in ham radio with a spirit of service at the Oxfam Trailwalker 2022. For those unfamiliar with it, the Oxfam Trailwalker is a significant event that invites teams from around the world to take part in a 100km trail walk. The event is organized by Oxfam, an international confederation of charitable organizations focused on the alleviation of global poverty.

As VR2WRR, along with my fellow radio operator VR2ZIR, we supported the event in the capacity of radio operators. Our role was to ensure smooth communication throughout the event and assist in coordinating the teams, making sure they were safe, on track, and well-informed about the trail conditions.

I am grateful for the chance to contribute to such a meaningful event and to use my ham radio skills in a practical and impactful way. Volunteering allows us to give back to the community and offers a sense of purpose and fulfillment.

The Oxfam Trailwalker 2022 was a unique experience, combining the thrill of amateur radio with the satisfaction of supporting a great cause. I look forward to more opportunities to employ my ham radio hobby in service to others.
